Ben is shaking as Phil comes to him. Phil asks him what he’s doing. He wants to what the blood is. Ben tells his father he doesn’t want to die. He doesn’t want his dad to find him dead in his bed in the morning. Ben looks at his dad and says that he’s ruining his day. Stella comes to Phil’s side and says to Ben “have you hurt yourself? Let’s go and get you cleaned up.” Ben falls to the floor screaming “No No No” as Phil scoops him up and carries him out of the room. Stella looks at Peggy and asks her what she thinks that was all about. Peggy tells Stella that she has no idea. Peggy asks if everyone would please remain seated and in the room as they work this out.
Phil carries Ben into the pool room and orders the men playing pool out. He asks Ben repeatedly what is wrong. Ben weeps.
Stella walks up to the officiant and asks her if they married yet. The officiant informs her that they are not. Stella tells her “but I have my ring on.” She informs her that she has not said her vows yet. Stella takes a deep, fearful breath in. She realizes she must do something. Stella turns around and catches Abi’s smirk. Stella makes her way towards the door and Abi grabs onto her mother in fear. Peggy asks Stella where she is going. She tells Peggy that she is going to go talk to them. Peggy tells her to leave it to Phil. Stella has a twisted look of anger on her face as she tells Peggy that they are her family now. Stella rushes out of the room as the guest begin to whisper to one another.
Stella drops her flowers as she races to find Ben and Phil. Phil is begging Ben to tell him what is wrong. He wants to know what has been going on and how he’s gotten blood on his shirt. Phil asks Ben what he’s done to himself. Ben cries out that he has not done anything. Ben jumps down and tells his dad to leave him. Ben runs right into Stella. Stella asks Ben what he’s said.
Stella asks Ben if he’s told his Dad. Ben is frightened. Phil wants to know what he’s supposed to have told him. Stella tells Ben that it’s alright, it’s time to get it out in the open. She tells him that he’s not in trouble and when his Dad hears he will be on his side. Ben yells out to his Dad as Stella grabs him. She tells Ben that he has not done anything wrong. It’s time. She tells him that he should tell his Dad. She tells him to be brave. Ben turns to Phil and asks him “Will you pick me?” Phil wants to know if this has anything to do with him coming between him and Stella. Stella interrupts Phil and says to Ben, “I’m sorry darling. This isn’t fair. Do you want me to tell him? I shouldn’t have made you come today. That wasn’t fair.” Phil declares that someone better tell him what is going on.
Peggy rushes in wondering what is going on. She wants to know if they are coming back in or what. Stella turns to Peggy and asks her to keep an eye on Ben as she has to tell Phil something very serious. Stella heads into the pool table room. Ben runs to his Gran and begs her to keep him safe. She tells him, of course, she will.
Stella and Phil are circling the pool table. She tells Phil that she knew this day was going to have a hitch. She has her wedding ring on, but he hasn’t. She tells him that they are not properly married yet. She starts to say that they can pop back in to finish it when Phil asks her what is going on with Ben. She says “we can pop back in and quickly finish.” Phil screams at her to tell him. Stella looks up to the left and then tells Phil that it’s Ian. Ian has been hurting Ben.
Back on the square, Bert, Jay, and Jase are sitting down in the cafe. Bert says “so you’re his father?” Jase says he is indeed. He introduces himself as Jason Dyer. Jase turns to Jay and says “so you alright there Jay? Any chance of a hello?” Jay gets up and leaves the cafe.
Phil is staring angrily at Stella as she begins to weave her tale of Ian hurting Ben. Stella tells Phil that Ben told her on the way to the wedding. She says that it all came pouring out of him. Stella says that of course, she told him that they should cancel the wedding, but Ben didn’t want to ruin the big day. She says that she supposes he wanted them to be together. His Mum and Dad to protect him. (Stella and Phil continue to circle the pool table as she talks) Phil says that he doesn’t understand why Ian’s been hurting him. He wants to know from Stella in what way has he been hurting him.
Stella huffs and then says to Phil that it’s going to be hard for her to tell him all of it but it’s going to be even harder for him to hear it. Phil tells her just to tell him. Stella looks shocked that he wants to know. She says “pinches, punches, little burns.” Phil says “little burns?” Stella stutters as she says “it doesn’t sound like much but it’s the conspiracy of silence they’ve built up that has scared Ben the most.” Phil wonders why Ian would, after all, they are brothers. Stella says she couldn’t believe it either.
Stella reminds Phil of that time they found bruises on Ben and Ian blamed her. Phil tells her he remembers, but it was the kids at school. She says in a hurried and raised voice, “yes that is what Ben said, but it’s funny how he changed his story.” Stella continues to tell Phil that it all started when Ben chose to live with them instead of Ian. Ian was jealous and determined to get back at Phil.
Phil stares at Stella with wonder. Stella continues to move nervously around the pool table and says in a more relaxed tone “sure there will be a way of working it all out. You know what brothers are like!” She looks up at Phil who now looks like he’s realized something. He asks her if Ben told her all of this on the very short car ride over. She shakes her head yes. Phil says that it is a long chat. She tells him it just came spilling out. Phil is looking at her doubtfully now and says “all of a sudden? Out of the blue?” Stella is fearful as she tells him yeah, yeah. Phil looks down at Stella’s hands and asks her what happened to her nails. Stella looks up and in an almost childlike voice says she picked them off in the car whilst he was telling her. She says it must have been anxiety she supposes. She looks at him knowingly, and he glares at her and says “It’s you innit.”
Peggy is coddling Ben as Stella comes running out of the room screaming “NO!” Peggy calls out to Stella. Ben calls out to his Dad to not to choose her, to stay with him. Phil stops in the doorway, Stella rushes out and steals the wedding car. She races off and stops to look to see if Phil is chasing her. She turns out and away from the wedding.
Back inside Phil is opening up Ben’s shirt to see his wounds. His wounds are bloody and look horrible. Phil breaks down in tears and says “oh my boy what has she done to you?” Ben sobs as Phil cuddles him. He apologizes to Ben.
Bert is interrogating Jase in the cafe. He wonders where Jase has been. He also wonders if he is who he says he is. Jase tells him he could say the same for Bert. Bert tells him he’s the only thing that boy has left. Bert tells Jase that Jay’s mum and gran are dead. Jase callously asks what Jay’s mum died of, too much moaning? Bert says to him that it was cancer. Jase tells Bert he’s not too bothered that they are both gone. Bert leans in and tells him that he is talking about his wife and daughter. Jase reminds him that if he’d loved them that much, he wouldn’t have let another man stand in his place. Jase tells him that they should drink their tea and quit playing who is the worst father game. Jase wonders where he can find Jay as he needs to talk to him.
Peggy, Phil, and Ben are talking. Ben tells his dad that he thought it was normal, that he’d tried to tell him, but he told him that it was all part of growing up. Phil tells him that he meant that growing pains, getting hair in places, etc. was what he was talking about becoming a man. Ben tells him that he didn’t understand. Peggy asks Ben if she’s touched him anywhere else. Phil scoffs but Peggy tells him that he has to ask. Ben tells them no she didn’t do anything like that. Peggy is thankful, but Phil says that it’s not ok. She’s been torturing Ben. Ben starts to cry again and thinks it is his fault. He says if he’d been nice and not messed with her papers and played tricks. Phil tells him none of that justifies what she’s been doing. Ben tells his Dad that Stella told him that if he said anything that Phil would get rid of him like he did Louise. He tells them that Stella told him that if he spoiled things, he wouldn’t wake up in the morning. Ben says he didn’t want to have his dad find him dead in his bed. Phil hugs him and tells him it’s alright. Phil promises that he will never see Stella again. He tells him that he loves him. Peggy and Phil walk out, and they argue about why no one noticed. Peggy tells Phil that she will look after Ben. Phil asks her what he’s supposed to do. Peggy tells him “Make her pay!!”
Phil walks out as the driver, and a lady is on the phone. He asks who they are calling, and the driver says the old bill. Phil takes the phone and tosses it. He tells them to call them back in an hour. He heads to his car, and a plane flies overhead. Phil races off.
On the square, Mickey and Gus are helping someone back their car up. Ian walks up and wonders why they are back early. Mickey says he thinks something was up as Stella was the only one in the motor. Ian looks up at the Vic bedroom windows.
Stella burst into Ben’s room. She is in a right panic. She grabs the glass of orange juice and pours it on his bed to make it appear as if he’s wet the bed. Then she grabs a photo of Phil and Ben. She smashes the frame and rips the picture in half. Ian walks in as she is trying to leave. Ian asks her what is going on. She tells him that she has found something out about Phil and she couldn’t go through with the wedding. Ian wonders what she’s talking about.
Outside, Gus is on the phone wondering if they’ve found out anything about his dog. Phil hits Gus’ cart as he walks out into the road. Mickey yells at Phil that he could have killed them. Phil rushes into the Vic and asks Shirley if she’s seen, Stella. She tells him about a half dozen times, and she’s sick of the sight of her. Ian is chasing Stella down the stairs asking her what Phil has done. Stella declares that Phil will kill her if he finds her there. Ian calls out after her. Phil slams through the door asking Ian where is she. Ian says she’s frightened for her life. Inside the pub, Stella runs through the bar. She stops as she sees their wedding cake. She grabs the topper, and Shirley asks her if Phil’s come to his senses. Stella tells her that she has an ugly mean soul. Shirley tells Stella that it’s better than not having one at all. Ian comes in and tells her to go that Phil will be down any second. Stella commands Ian to look after Ben for her and to tell him that he is her special boy. Ian tells her to go and locks the door. Ian tells Phil to let her go. Phil pushes Ian and tells him to shut up. Phil sees Stella drive off and says “I’m going to kill you!!!”
Jase comes into the flat. Bert comes in behind him and asks Jay what Wellard is doing in there. Jay tells him it’s not Wellard. Jase looks and says that the dogs’ name is Chaz. Jase sends Bert out so he can talk to Jay. Jay is smiling. Jase asks him what he’s smiling about. Jay says it’s because they got one over on Bert. Jase asks him what he’s doing becoming a racist. He demands that Jay apologize. Jay says he won’t. Jase takes Wellard out of the house.
Phil is driving looking for Stella when his phone rings. He asks if it’s her. He says he’s going to rip her guts out. He stops the car next to a skip. She calls back and asks him if he wants to hear her side or if he wants to believe his imagination. Phil tells her that he wants to hear her side. She says he’s only saying that because he wants to kill her. She tells him “heat of the moment aside, we both know what Ben is capable of, don’t we?” Phil mumbles, and she asks him to tell her what Ben is capable of. Phil asks her where she is. Stella demands he tell her what Ben is capable of. Lies, jealousy. Phil says yes yes and demands to know where she is. She gets out of the car saying she still has her wedding dress on. She can’t believe what a nightmare this has become. He asks where she is again. She says there is no reason for them to see one another again. She knows he’s made up his mind. She tells him that they should just leave it there and be done with it. He tells her that he doesn’t want to leave it there. She is holding on to a gate and tells him “thank you, Phil, thank you for nearly marrying me.”
Phil tells her that he just wants to talk to her. Stella wonders what there is to say. Phil tells her that he loves her. She tells him he doesn’t mean that. He says “of course I do, I’m talking to you now aren’t I?” Stella says it’s only because he wants to hurt her. He says to Stella “how could I hurt you? I was going to marry you, weren’t I?” He tells her he should be with Ben, but he can’t just switch off his feelings. Stella softens and tells him that she is by an old factory. He asks her what she sees. She wonders if he really still loves her. He whispers “of course I do, now what do you see?” She describes her location and finds the name of the road. He asks her for the name of the road. As she is walking towards it, she cries to him that the last thing she wanted was for Ben to be upset. Phil asks her again for the road name as he has his map book out. She says the road name is Access Road. It got all built, but nobody bothered to give it a nice name. Phil finds it in his book. She asks Phil again if he’s going to hurt her. He whispers “no, no, of course, I’m not. You just stay right there okay?” He grabs a pipe out of the skip and hangs up the phone. He gets back in the car and heads towards Stella.
Gus is swinging as just over his shoulder Jase has Jay in a headlock. Jay is yelling at him. He says that dog was giving him what he wanted. Jase lets Wellard go. Wellard runs right to Gus. Jase tells Jay to look at how happy Gus is. Jay says he was making him happy. Jase and Jay walk off.
Phil comes racing towards Stella. He nearly hits her with his car as she slams up against the road name sign and fence. Phil backs up the car as he’s driven past her. Stella takes off running as she realizes Phil means to hurt her. He turns the car around towards her. She locks herself behind the gate. She yells at him “you said you weren’t going to hurt me!” Phil says to her that he lied! He takes the pipe and pounds on the gate. He tells her he means to kill her. Stella screams at him to calm down. Phil is close enough to rip her veil off of her head. She tells him that she never had him down for a wife beater. Phil yells back that he never had her down as a child abuser. She tells him that he’s so knee-jerk and jumps to his tabloid conclusions. An eye for an eye.
Stella childishly tells him that she never did anything to Ben that he didn’t do to her. She points out her wounds and Phil angrily tells her that Ben’s told him everything. She goes on whinging about it, and Phil tells her that Ben is a child and he trusted her. He screams at her that she crawled inside his mind and picked it apart. She tells Phil that he doesn’t understand. I was his friend, his only friend. He was scared of you. I brought you two together. I made you love him. She tries to calm him down again and tell him that this is really over the top. She asks him if it is because deep down you know that he knows this is his fault? Phil grabs the gate, shakes it and screams at her “you what?”
Jay apologizes to Yolande. He tells her he was only trying to look hard. He tells her she is alright. He says obviously Patrick is more alright. Jase takes Jay out. As they are leaving Yolande introduces herself, but Jase ignores her.
Stella suggests that Phil brought this on Ben. Phil calls her a freak. Stella says its so easy to cast accusations, isn’t it? She says “we’re here because of the things all of us have done.” Phil tears into her that they are there because she is a punty boy nut job who pretends to be as scared as a mouse but really you go around torturing little kids. Stella declares he was her savior after her husband and her parents. She thought he was meant to love her. Phil says he was marrying her, wasn’t he? She says “go buy your own engagement ring, Stella! Don’t change your travel plans, Grant. Talk about phoning it in!” Phil says “so that justifies telling my son that you’ll kill him in his sleep?” She says she didn’t mean it. That she was panicking and has been so stressed with trying to get him up the aisle. Phil says to her that Ben asked her to stop abusing him. She says that she was so nearly there.
She says it wasn’t like that. You don’t understand what it feels like to feel like you aren’t even there. She blames her sisters’ death and how her parents ignored her after the death. She tells him that she is the reason she is the way she is. That they dumped her off wherever they could. She tells him he doesn’t understand what it is like to hear you aren’t wanted. She says that she would pinch herself to know she was there. He tells her that she should have gotten help. She says that once she was out and had a life of her own, she thought it was better. She screams at him that it is his fault as much as hers. Phil drives his car through the gates. Stella runs up the stairs. Phil chases up behind her. He calls out for her. She has left the cake topper on the ledge.
Stella comes around to the ledge of the building. He asks her what she’s doing. She tells him she is making him listen. She begs him to tell her that he loves her and she will give him the satisfaction of putting his hands around her neck. He tells her that she isn’t dragging him into her sick games. He isn’t an 11-year-old boy she can bully. She says she isn’t a bully. He says “Nah you’re right. You are nothing.” She cries for him not to say that. He tells her that he chose her because she was safe. That he thought she would help take care of Ben and keep her mouth shut for the next thirty years. She tells him that she was right. He tells her that it doesn’t matter if he didn’t love her that was between them and she can’t go round bully kids because of it. She looks over the edge and says it’s a long way down. He tells her that she isn’t going to do it. She says in a childlike voice “watch me daddy” We see Ben’s photo fall to the ground and hear a thud as her body hits the hood of the car. Phil is looking at his hands and looks over to see her laying there. Someone comes running up as he is looking over the edge.
